Certificate and Licensure

Salem State's certificate programs offer in depth introductions to specialized fields, equip students with necessary entry level skills, and provide training for those desiring to enrich or advance their careers.

A competency certificate is an official recognition that a student has satisfactorily completed specific courses required by the academic department.

The art + design department at Salem State has designed this certificate program for those individuals who wish to further their education in the world of art and design. Graphic design focuses on providing print and non-print media resources for businesses and other organizations. Trained professionals in this field provide solutions to many complex design and advertising problems, as well as develop the actual printed media piece.

Salem State's art + design major program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The certificate program in graphic design combines an intensive program of training in the technical knowledge and skills of the computer graphics field with a rigorous academic program in art and design. This program deals with the planning and design of graphic materials for advertising, desktop publishing, corporate art, graphic production and web design.

Students will develop the necessary software skills with QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop among others, which will enable them to pursue new entry-level employment opportunities in the graphics field.
