Physical Geology GLS100 Section L27
Laboratory Syllabus

Spring 2008

Course Information

Goals and Objectives

The goal of lab is to learn how geologists gain knowledge of the earth through scientific investigation.

This goal will be achieved through the following objectives:

  1. obtaining the basic understanding and skills required to identify earth materials
  2. learning how geologic events are interpreted through the study of earth materials
  3. understanding the evolution of theories and the application of scientific method to solving problems
  4. learning to read and obtain data from maps
  5. learning how models are used to understand geologic processes

Lab Expectations:

  1. Come prepared. Read the lab before class.  Generally I hand them out during lecture.  Labs can also be downloaded from my website.
  2. Review what you learned in the previous lab(s).  Expect a short quiz at the beginning of each lab.
  3. Do not leave until your lab has been completed and checked by me. They must be complete and correct. Labs will be collected periodically, but generally you'll need them to study for the next prelab quiz.

Assessment: Assessment will be based on attendance, completion of labs, written reports, and quizzes.

Studying lab samples for quizzes outside of scheduled lab time: You are generally welcome to work on labs or study samples when the lab is free, or during any lab section provided it is convenient for the attending professor. Be polite and do not talk during his/her class.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY : Your are responsible for completing all course requirements and for keeping up with all that goes on in class, whether or not your are present. Due to the lengthy explanation required for each lab and the number of labs being taught this semester, I will not have time to individually review labs for those who have missed them. It is therefore recommended that you find or make a friend from whom you can obtain notes and information in case you are absent.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Salem State College is committed to providing students with disabilities with a living and learning experience at the College which assures them equal access to all programs and facilities of the College, which makes all reasonable academic aids and adjustments for their disabilities and provides them with maximum independence and the full range of participation in all areas of college life.

Grade Evaluation and Lab Schedule

Your laboratory grade is 35% of the final grade for the course.

Grade Evaluation

  • Each lab = 5 points (completion and quizzes)  or 10 points if a written report is required.
  • Forest River Lab = 15 points

Your final lab grade (max = 35) will be calculated  accordingly:

((Total points earned) / (Total points possible))*.412

(.412 scales your lab grade to equal 35% of the total grade for this course.  The scaling factor will change if the number of labs we are able to complete is altered.)

make up policy:  You will be required to make up missed labs on your own time.  The structure lab can not be made up.

An Automatic 0 will be assigned for any lab not completed

An Automatic F for the course will be assigned for anyone missing 3 or more labs.
