Since the inception of our Writing-Across-the-Curriculum
Program, the amount of writing assigned in courses throughout the College
has increased dramatically. Professors in every discipline have consistently
demonstrated a strong commitment to using writing as a tool to help students
learn course content. Moreover, realizing that students learn to write
more effectively by writing more often, professors are providing students
with frequent opportunities to practice and refine their writing skills.
The Writing-Enhanced Program
takes this commitment one step further. Twenty writing courses across
the disciplines run each semester. In these special courses, writing,
both formal and informal, is used as frequently as possible to promote
the learning of course materials and to give students as much experience
as possible in writing the sorts of documents central to their majors.
These courses, which are kept small, provide intense interaction between
teachers and students. These courses also signify the importance
of writing by making it count as a minimum of 50% of each student's grade.
Professors who teach in the program
attend a series of training sessions to help them integrate writing more
fully into their courses. These sessions, which last one semester,
are designed to provide information and support about using writing in
discipline-specific classroom contexts. After completing these workshops,
professors teach in the program for a minimum of two years.
