Viruses: Protection & Prevention
Critical Update
Adobe has released a critical update for Adobe Reader & Acrobat for users running on Windows XP/2003 with Internet Explorer 7 (Vista users are not affected). If you are currently using Adobe Reader and Acrobat 8.1 or earlier, please update to version 8.1.1.

- From Adobe Acrobat Reader, click on the Help menu
- From the Help menu, Select Check for Updates and please follow the directions

Viruses are released into the workplace on a daily basis, and are transmitted by email, computer disk, thumb drive and over the Internet. More often than not, the viruses you hear about on the news will not affect your computer. If you think you have a computer virus, relax.
- Download and run Stinger to locate and remove several common viruses.
- Download and run FixWelch to locate and remove the Welchia Virus.
- Virus Scan - Patches & Updates
Most student and employee computers at SSC have McAfee Virus Scan installed. McAfee needs to be updated frequently in order to be effective against viruses.

- Operating System - Patches & Updates
Click on your [Start] button and choose "Windows Update" to access the Microsoft website and download any updates needed for your computer.
