ResNet: Self-Certification
Visit http://resnet.salemstate.edu from your dorm room after you connect your computer's Ethernet card to your wall jack using an Ethernet cable. Complete the ResNet activation form located at the bottom of the page, then click submit. This will activate your computer on ResNet for the entire semester.
Having Problems?
Try the below options if you are having trouble connecting to the form:
- Be sure TCP/IP is configured properly. See specific computer instructions below to check this.
- Disable your wireless connection. Many laptops have a switch or button located on the laptop which can be used to disable the wireless card. Some may have a key stroke combination to do this (such as FN+F2).
- Verify connection settings. If you used this machine to dial up to an internet connection, you may need to change a setting within in your web browser.
- Open Internet Explorer, click on the 'Tools' menu located at the top of the window.
Select 'Internet Options'.
- In the new window, click on the 'Connections' tab.
- Under 'Dial up settings' select the option 'Never dial a connection'.
- Click 'OK' then click 'OK' on the remaining window.
- Please note when you try to use the machine from home, you may need to restore these options.
- Verify proxy server configuration.
- Open Internet Explorer, click on the 'Tools' menu located at the top of the window.
- Select 'Internet Options'.
- In the new window, click on the 'Connections' tab.
- Click on 'LAN settings...'.
- Be sure the 'Use proxy server' box is NOT checked, if it is checked, click on it and the check will be removed.
Click 'OK' then click 'OK' on the remaining window.
- Please note when you try to use the machine from home, you may need to restore these options.
- Verify there is no problem with your data jack.
- Try restarting your computer while connected into a roommate's data jack.
- If you can access resnet.salemstate.edu from a roommate's data jack and not your own jack, call x2036 and leave a message stating that your data jack doesn't work.
- We will respond as quickly as possible to fix this problem.
Verifying if TCP/IP is installed and configured correctly:
Give your Computer a Unique Name
A common error that you may receive is that the computer name you specified is already in use on the network. To prevent this problem, please change your computer name to something unique:
- Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, then double-click Network.
- When the network window opens, click the Identification tab.
- Type a UNIQUE computer name in the box that you'll see.
- When finished, click OK.
- You may need your windows CD, then it will ask you to restart.
On a Windows 2000 machine:
- Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
- Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
- Double-click "Local Area Connection" and click properties
- Highlight "Internet Protocol," click properties, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
and click ok.
On a Windows XP machine:
- Click on Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Network Connections.
- Double-click "Local Area Connection" and click properties.
- Highlight "Internet Protocol," click properties, select obtain automatically,
and click ok.
On a Windows Vista machine: Not yet supported
On a Mac:
- Click on the Apple on the top left corner of your desktop.
- Choose System Preferences and then Network
- In the Network window select:
- Location: Automatic
- Show: Built-in Ethernet
- Click on the TCP/IP tab and select: Configure IPv4: Using DHC
- If none of the selections are showing, click the Up/Down arrows
- Click on Apply Now and restart the computer to save the new settings.
Still not working?
If your connection still doesn't work, it is highly likely that your computer isn't configured correctly. Follow the steps again, or call x2036.
