Student Development & Enrichment Opportunities
College Visits
College visits are arranged for grade 11 and 12 students in the fall and spring of each year. Students will visit at least one state college and university, a private college, an out-of-state college or university and a community college. Prior to selecting the college or university to be visited, students research the schools, and compile a list of post-secondary institutions they are interested in visiting. All program students have the opportunity to participate in an annual college visit. Other opportunities for college visits include the annual TRIO Day event (held in February of each year and typically offering visits to several area colleges) and participation in several college tours arranged throughout the year.
Student Government
Each new academic year the program conducts Student Government elections to nominate a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Weekly meetings include issues pertaining to: student retention strategies, evaluating the effectiveness of tutorials and workshops, organization of events and cultural activities, community service opportunities, web page updates and assistance with summer planning. Assist with coordinating student recognition opportunities such as Student of the Week, quarterly Honor Roll Pizza Party and Birthday Celebrations.
Student Conferences & Leadership Opportunities
These are offered throughout the year: TRIO sponsored New England Student Leadership Conference in Fairlee, VT (October); the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Science Network in Boston, MA (October);TRIO Day held at a designated New England site (February); and the TRIO National Student Leadership Congress in Washington, DC (June). Students who are interested in attending conferences supported by the program will be required to compete by writing an essay on a topic chosen by the SSCUBP staff (in the event that not all sixty-five students can attend due to limited space available). Students' qualifications to attend the conference(s) will be based on the content and quality of the essay turned in, program participation, and academic performance.
Career Fair
An annual SSCUBP Career Fair will be organized each spring to include, but not be limited to, individuals from the following areas:, business, computer science, engineering, medicine, mental health, technology, criminal justice, social work, education, and architecture. Moreover, the Program will seek to identify presenters who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages and circumstances confronted by target students.
Cultural Activities
Activities may include theater, museums, city tours, ballet, musical productions, dance performances and outdoor activities (i.e., rope's course). To ensure that each participant has the opportunity to attend the planned event, flyers are posted to announce the date, time, and location of the activity, and a sign up sheet will be distributed
