History and Geography of WWI

This summer join Salem State University professors Stephen Matchak and Christopher Mauriello to study the history and geography of World War I. The institute begins on the Salem State University campus with two full days in the classroom studying the causes, events, and consequences of WWI. We then travel to France and Belgium to explore WWI battle sites, cemeteries, and museums in the following capital and regional cities:

  • Peronne, France (Museum of the History of the Great War)
  • Arras, France (Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval Memorial, Vimy Ridge Memorial/Trenches)
  • Ypres, Belgium (Tyne Cot Cemetery, Flanders Fields Museum, Menin Gate)
  • Bruges, Belgium (Langemark, Passendale Museum, Diksmuide Trenches/Memorial)
  • Brussels, Belgium (Royal Army and Military History Museum)
  • Metz and Verdun, France (Fort de Douaumont, Fleury, Ossuary, Bayonet Trenches)
  • Reims, France (Montfaucon, American Memorial and American Cemetery)
  • Chateau Thierry (Belleau Wood, Aisne-Marne Cemetery, American Military Memorial)
