Transfer Admissions

Requirements
To complete your degree, general education, major-specific, and graduation requirements must be met. Credit transfer depends upon your major and the applicability of completed courses. Whenever possible, we will award credit for courses completed with a C- or better. The transfer of credit will be based on your previous college's regional accreditation status, as well as comparability to courses, faculty credentials and requirements offered at Salem State College. You are strongly advised to meet with a transfer advisor at your present college/university or schedule an appointment to meet with a Salem State College transfer admissions professional to discuss the transfer of coursework.

Credit/Life Experience Validation

SSC recognizes that prior learning outside the regular academic setting can be a valuable part of your educational experience. Therefore, several methods have been developed through which you can validate mastery of specific academic subjects and can use this knowledge to petition for academic credit. The following can validate prior learning and result in academic credit:

  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
    General Examinations:
    • Natural Sciences with a score of 489 or higher
    • Mathematics with a score of 487 or higher
    • Humanities with a score of 489 or higher
    • Social Sciences and History with a score of 489 or higher
  • Subject Examinations:
Generally students must score in the 50% or higher
  • Exemption from English Composition 1 or 2 requirement may be satisfied by:
SAT Verbal examination score of 600 or higher, a strong high school record and an "A" average in English.
  • CLEP scores of 500 or above and completion of the Department Essay Examination
  • An exemption test for Public Speaking and Health & Wellness requirements.
  • Challenge exams are available to Registered Nurses for credit in both Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.
  • Life Experience may be granted when you demonstrate competency in specific subject areas related to a course of study offered at SSC. You may be awarded up to 30 credits which may not be used for completion of the final credits.
  • ACT-PEP exams for students seeking nursing credit for the RN to BSN program.

Transfer Graduation Requirements

  • When you transfer to SSC you must successfully complete at least one year (a minimum of 30 credits hours) at SSC in order to receive the Baccalaureate Degree. All curriculum requirements within your major must be met. The cumulative GPA for you will be determined solely on the basis of courses completed at SSC.
  • Typically, transfer credit will be granted for courses completed with a grade of C- or better. Courses should be comparable to those offered at SSC.
  • The number of transfer credits granted is dependent upon your choice of major at SSC and the applicability of completed courses. Whenever possible, credit will be granted for courses completed at any other accredited college.
  • If transferring 30 or more credits, you will be exempt from our one credit physical education requirement.
