Salem State College has partnered with Avaya in providing and supporting the college's telephone and voice mail systems. Resident students are provided "dial tone" through the college's phone system. Students will need to use a telephone calling card to place long distance calls from their residence hall. Students can acquire a calling card from a reputable vendor before arriving on campus or purchase a prepaid long distance calling card from the Salem State College bookstore.

The telecom department is currently exploring other technologies such as speech recognition to provide better, faster, and less expensive phone and network services.
