School of Social Work

Welcome

Cheryl Springer, MSW, Ph.D.Welcome to the website for Salem State College School of Social Work - we welcome your interest in social work as well as this opportunity to share some information about our School.

The School of Social Work is an integral part of Salem State College, a vibrant state college in historic Salem, Massachusetts with over 150 years of educating for excellence in public service. The College established an undergraduate social work major in 1969 - a major that was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) as a BSW Program in 1979. When the MSW Program was founded in 1986, the College formally established the School of Social Work. Both Programs remain fully accredited by CSWE and firmly rooted in the College's commitment to the highest standards of education for human services - education achieved at an affordable cost.

The School of Social Work has extended the College's commitment to human services by educating students specifically for professional social work practice in public and non-profit service sectors. The School's graduates are making distinctive contributions to direct practice, administrative leadership, and policy as well as program development throughout Massachusetts, New England, and beyond. At the same time, the School's faculty and staff contribute to social work knowledge and practice through their research and scholarship as well as their extensive service in local, national, and international communities.

The School's mission as well as the BSW and MSW Programs' goals and curricula reflect the social work profession's values and ethics, especially with regard to the preparation of practitioners who competently provide social work services for diverse populations as well as populations at risk for social and economic injustice. Students work closely with faculty and their peers in small classes in order to fully develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand and competently address complex human needs and rights. Because the School is located on the North Shore of Boston, students' field education occurs in some of the nation's leading public and non-profit agencies and organizations throughout New England.

Please use this website to learn more about the School of Social Work and its BSW and MSW Programs as well as its faculty, staff, alumni and numerous educational initiatives. We appreciate your interest in professional social work education and thank you for visiting our website. We look forward to your continued interest in Salem State College School of Social Work. Feel free to contact us directly for any additional information.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Springer, MSW, Ph.D.
