MSW Field Education Calendar A/Y 2005-2006

  1. Meetings
    1. MSW I Students (SWK721-22)
    2. Field Orientation Seminars

      Session I:
      Thursday, 9/01/05, 1:30-4pm
      Room: Forten Hall, Library, North Campus

      All MSW I Students meet with Field Education Coordinator & Faculty Field Liaisons

      Session II:

      Wednesday, 9/07/05
      Group A: 9:30am - 12 noon
      Group B: 1:30pm - 4pm
      Room: Presidential Hall, Alumni House, South Campus

      All MSW I Students will sign up on 9/1/05, during Session I, for either group A or B

    3. MSW II Students (SWK841-42)
    4. Thursday, 9/08/05, 12:30-1:45pm
      Room: Presidential Hall, Alumni House, South Campus

      Orientation to Field (required)
      Students meet with Liaisons as part of Orientation.

    5. MSW I and II Students (SWK721-22 and SWK841-42)
    6. Integrated Field Seminars

      September-December, 2005 and February-April, 2006

      All MSW I and II Students attend monthly seminars with Liaisons at times and locations to be confirmed by Faculty Field Liaisons on 9/01/05 or 9/08/05. The day will be on a required Field day.

      Training Program for New Field Instructors

      Register in advance by contacting the school's of social work directly. Please visit the website for the New England Consortium of Graduate Field Directors for further information.

      * In inclement weather, listen to major radio stations (WBZ) for School closings.
      Re-schedule dates will be same day, following week.

      Appreciation Event for Field Instructors

      Combined BSW/MSW Programs. Appreciation Breakfast for Field Instructors, their students, and faculty over the past year: Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

  2. Time in Placement
    1. A. MSW I Students (SWK721- 22): scheduled for 464 hours (required).
    2. Begin 9/21/05, end 5/05/06; 16 hrs. (2 workdays) during usual business days, Wednesdays and Fridays. These students are required to attend Integrated Field Seminars. These are scheduled on regular Field days; which will be confirmed in September. These students have classes on Mondays and Thursdays.
    3. MSW II Students (SWK841-42): scheduled for 600 hours (required).
    4. Begin 9/12/05, end 5/02/06; 20 hrs. (2 ½ workdays: ½ day Monday, to accommodate holidays; full day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). These students are required to attend Integrated Field Seminars. These are scheduled on regular Field days; which will be confirmed in September. These students have classes on Thursdays and Fridays.
    5. All Field Students
      1. Field Education Hours: Four hours of required Field Education hours may be scheduled otherwise, without Field Department approval, if the field instructor approves this as beneficial to student learning and agency service and if they do not conflict with School courses and Field seminars. Other deviations in scheduling require approval by the Field Education Office. Please refer to the MSW Field Education Curriculum Guide [PDF 1.1MB] regarding time out of Field for attending School and community functions.
      2. Students attend Field Learning Centers (FLC's) for one week of scheduled field days during winter break and all scheduled field days during spring break.
      3. All scheduled days missed from FLC for any reason must be made up, except for:
        1. holidays observed by Salem State College (see Section D);
        2. two weeks of winter break;
        3. personal days allowed each student during academic year (MSW I: 2 days; MSW II: 3 days);
        4. *educational/professional events for which the College or the School of Social Work cancel classes/field for all students;
        5. participation in School, professional, community social work committees of which the student is a member, with the awareness of the Field Instructor;
        6. other professional meetings deemed beneficial to student learning and relevant to the FLC.
      4. Students are not allowed to be in placement extra hours in order to shorten the span of placement.
  3. Due Dates

      10/03/05: MSW II Students (SWK841-42)
      10/04/05: MSW I Students (SWK721-22)
    2. Proof of Purchase of Professional Indemnity Insurance ($1,000,00 minimum) By All Students

      9/09/05:Last day to submit to Field Education Office
      NB: Employed students covered at workplace should submit letter from personnel officer by 9/09/05

      Students Not Complying Will Be Discontinued From Placement
    3. Evaluation of Student Performance by Field Instructor
      12/09/05: Fall, 2005 MSW I & II Students (SWK721 & SWK841)
      4/14/06: Spring, 2006 MSW I & II Students (SWK722 & SWK842)
  4. Holidays recognized by Salem State College, 2005-2006 Academic Year (students are not required to be at FLC):

  5. School Recesses
  6. Winter Break begins week of 12/23/05. For ONE WEEK during break, students are in placement as scheduled for 2 or 2 ½ days. Also, make-up days available for making-up placement hours.
    MSW I Students return to FLC's on Friday, 1/20/06.
    MSW II Students return to FLC's on Monday, 1/23/06.

    Spring Break begins Monday, 3/13/06 through Friday, 3/17/06.
    MSW I & MSW II Students continue in placement as scheduled for 2 or 2 ½ days. Also, make-up days available.

    **College or School suspension of classes and field for all students for educational/professional events: TBA. As these are scheduled, notification will be distributed and Field Learning Center will be informed. If students attend such events on a field day, they need not make up time at FLC's.
