BSW Field Work
The Salem State BSW Field Work Office places and supports approximately 25 senior BSW students in field work placements annually. Students complete field work requirements in a local human service agency, under the supervision of a credentialed social worker. Normally, students begin field work in September of senior year and work two days per week until the end of the spring semester. In order to accommodate individual student programs, placements beginning in January and extending until mid-summer are sometimes arranged.
A student is deemed ready for field work through a rigorous "readiness process" that asks each student to assess and document her/his academic eligibility, professional capability and emotional maturity to undertake the demands of the field work experience.
Concurrent with field work placement, students participate in a weekly seminar with fellow field work students, under the guidance of a faculty liaison. Students use this venue for several purposes: to support and encourage one another; to better link theory learned in the social work curriculum with "real world" practice; to enhance their understanding of the multiple dynamics that impact social work in an agency setting by comparing situations; and to develop skills needed in group facilitation and participation.
The BSW Field Work staff consists of Cynthia Giraourd, Secretary, Patricia Connolly, Field Work Coordinator, and BSW faculty who serve as Field Work Liaisons in a given year.
