                               I.      Minutes
 

Changes to the minutes: The Senate brought up the following changes to the minutes of September 16, 2003:

 

Under the Academic Affairs report, Chair Skorker claims that he also appointed Chair King and Chair Ryer to his committee and they were not listed.  Also Laura Downing was misspelled as Laura Downay. 

 

     MOTION: President Dalton entertained a motion to accept the

       Minutes from September 16, 2003.

                            II.      PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

MOTION: President Dalton entertained a motion to accept David Mazza as Assistant Treasurer.

         Melissa Ryan to Senior Senate.

        Wayne Lappas as Chair of Governmental relations

   · President Dalton mentioned that after much consideration we are going to try to go with a concert.  Next week we will be forming a concert committee.

 

  ·President Dalton informed us that this Thursday, September 25, 2003 she would be attending another student advisory council meeting at Worchester State at 7:00pm.  She told everyone that they are free to go because it is an open meeting, and then she asked for any ideas anyone might have that they want her to bring up at the meeting.

 

·President Dalton also asked everybody to re-look at the acceptance packet and see if there are other committees people would like to join because at least one person has to be in each committee.  She would like everyone to re-think about the committees and see her as soon as possible.

 

·President Dalton also informed the group that Aniluz Rodriguez resigned from Senior Senate and that Lori DesRosiers resigned from Junior Senate.

                  

 

                         III.      VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

MOTION:  Vice President Batastini made a motion to accept the

               President’s report. 

           Cahill (Unanimous)

 

·Vice President Batastini let everyone know that the second part of the Groups and Clubs orientation was last Thursday and it went well.  She also said that if the President or Treasurer of a group is nonexistent or was not at the meeting than they must see Treasurer Garvey.

 

·Vice President Batastini reminded everybody that the Leadership Induction Ceremony was this Thursday September 25, 2003 at 4:00. She told everyone that they had to dress nice.  We took a head count of the people who would be attending and all are going, which is great since it is a required event for Senators.

 

·Vice President Batastini announced the Viking Spirit Award on October 16, 2003, which is an award given to one male and one female based on G.P.A, leadership, and involvement on campus.  Applications are available now and can be picked up in Room 222 in the Campus Center.

 

·Vice President Batastini informed the group that there was a mistake in their binders under the list of mandatory events.  On October 9, there is a Haunted happenings meeting at 4:00 in the MLK room, this was not on the list. So please add it.

 

· Vice President Batastini read a list of the people who have not turned in their Merrowvista paperwork.  She told them to see Sharon tonight and let her know if you can make it or not.  She then read a list of things that should be brought, which was given out last meeting.  She informed everybody that the emergency number at Merrowvista is 603-539-6607. 

 

        MOTION: President Dalton entertained a motion to accept the Vice  

       President’s report.

                         IV.      TREASURER'S REPORT 
      
· Treasurer Garvey brought up the sponsorship to the speaker series and suggested that we donate $2500 like we have done in the past.  He told everyone about our budget and opened the issue up to discussion.  Senator Ryan agreed with donating $2500 and the rest of the group voted the same. 

 

              MOTION:  Treasurer Garvey made a motion to donate

                   $2500 to the speaker series.

· Treasurer Garvey then passed around the itinerary so everybody who was interested could see.

 

MOTION:  President Dalton entertained a motion to accept the 

 Treasurer’s report.

                            V.      ASST. TREASURER’S REPORT

 

· Assistant Treasurer Mazza introduced himself to the group and expressed how excited he was to be working with everyone this year and having a lot of fun.

                         VI.      SECRETARY’S REPORT

 

· Secretary Spano reminded the senators that they must hold office hours at least one hour per week. The rest of the Senate must sign up with Sharon.  All office hours must be completed so even if you sign up for a day early in the week, you still have to make that hour up either at the end of the week or by serving 2 hours next week.  Failure to do so will result in an absence.  The E-Board is currently trying to find ways that the office hour can be used to represent the students.  She asked everyone to brainstorm some ideas and that we would talk about this over the weekend at our super-fun trip to Merrowvista.

 

· Secretary Spano also reminded everyone that there is a short meeting after this senate meeting to discuss what the SGA float and banner will look like for the Homecoming Parade. 

 

MOTION: President Dalton entertained a motion to accept the Secretary’s report.

                      VII.      STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

·        FINANCE COMMITTEE

 

MOTION: Treasurer Garvey made a motion to appoint David Mazza and Johan Pereira to the finance committee.

      Runyan (Unanimous)

 

                            · Treasurer Garvey announced to the members of the finance

Committee that on October 2 at 6:00 in the Heritage room MSA 

and the Catholic Student Community are meeting with the

Committee.  He informed them that the group’s presentations

are in their mailboxes.

 

 

 

·        RULES COMMITTEE

 

MOTION:  Chair King entertained a motion to appoint Julissa Alfonzo to the rules committee. 

      Runyan/Batastini (Unanimous)

 

·Chair King explained that her committee met via e-mail and came up with a new and improved referendum.  We all have a copy and one will be posted outside the SGA office so she would like everyone to look it over and give suggestions because she intends to present it and have it voted on next week.

 

· Chair King announced that she is having a meeting Wednesday, September 24 at 6:00pm in the Presidential Room.

 

· President Dalton assigned the rules committee the task of re-doing the agenda portion of the constitution so that it includes senate reports from each class.  Chair King is thrilled to get working on it.

 

· Chair King informs everyone that she will be posting times that she is available to meet with people.

 

·Chair King informs us that Constitutional jeopardy will be ready for Merrowvista.

 

 

·        STUDENT LIFE COMMITTEE

 

 · Chair Boucher shared her idea for a concert, which was the Trippin Billies.

 

·        GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

 

Chair Lappas introduces himself to the group.

 

·        ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

 

     MOTION: Chair Skorker entertained a motion to appoint Jennifer

       Runyan and Kareemah Jamal to the academic affairs committee.

· Chair Skorker informed us that he met with the Vice President of academic affairs and all of his ideas he brought up last meeting are already in the process so he is going to be doing a lot of personal relations talking to people trying to push things along. 

 

· Chair also shared some ideas that students have given him, these included gym credits for athletes, surveys in class, and computer enhanced classes to be marked as such in the course catalogs. 

 

· President Dalton suggested that he work on class cancellations posted daily on the website.

 

·Vice president Batastini suggested that he look into how to change the parameters of a class in the catalog. 

 

· Chair Lappas suggests a way of notifying students of a course change.

 

 

·        JUDICIAL AFFAIRS

·        PUBLIC RELATIONS

 

· Chair Ryer announces that she will be taking pictures at the end of the meeting next week for the web page and even if you do not want an individual picture she would like a group photo.

 

                   VIII.      OLD BUSINESS
 
None

 

                         IX.      NEW BUSINESS

 

President Dalton explained that we had two Sophomore Senators because there were 400 extra sophomores that were not represented.  Each senator represents 200 people in their class so we added two ore senators.

 

 

 

                            X.      DISCUSSION

 

     · Chair Runyan announced the Salem State Drinkout this Thursday in Vets hall.  There is a casino from 8-10pm with really cool prizes to be won along with karaoke.  At 10pm there will be big chair photos and at midnight there will be a sobriety testing, the team with the most amount of sober people at the end of the nights win cash.

 

       · Secretary Spano passed a sheet around and encouraged people to sign up to be on Team SGA for the sobriety testing at the Drinkout on Thursday at midnight.

 

· Student Trustee Jonathan Ring invited everyone who was interested to go to the meeting of the Board of Trustees Wednesday, September, 24 at 6:00pm in Upper South Campus in the Salem room of the Alumni house. They will be discussing human resources and a commencement speaker among other things.

 

· Sharon announces that she is the advisor for the Alliance and that next week is GLBT Awareness Week. There will be a mock wedding Monday, September 29 from 5:00-7:00 in Alumni plaza where 3 couples, two girls, two guys, and a girl and a guy, will be married.  There will also be workshops throughout the week informing students what is means to be gay, lesbian, or transgender.

 

·Vice President Batastini urges people to speak up when voting. She would like to here your vote and/or discussion.
