MINUTES OF JANUARY 20, 2004

                               I.      Minutes

 

                        President Dalton announced the minutes for December 2, 2003,

were accepted as they were written.

 

                            II.      PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

 · President Dalton welcomed everyone back and announced that

next meeting (Tuesday January 27th) we will be going to Vinny

T’s for our dinner that got snowed out at the end of last semester. 

She then took a head count and it looked like everyone can make

it.  We will be meeting at 4:30 in the MLK room first.

 

· President Dalton made everyone aware that much of the work

study money has depleted more than expected students may be

asking questions of the senate and we would encourage you to

direct them to the financial aid office.  Dr. Cahill, the Vice

President of Student Life, will be addressing the senate on this

matter on February 3.

 

· Dr. Brossoit announced that as a group over 50% of SGA

received a GPA of greater that 3.0, which is excellent. 

Unfortunately some of us did not do so well and in order to be a

part of any campus group or club you can’t be on academic

probation or on academic warning.  He will be speaking to some

of us.  He also reminded everyone about the resources that are

available right here on campus like the writing center, the math

lab, and many more.  Dr. Brossoit also mentioned that you must

be full-time to remain on SGA so if you do not have enough

classes you have until Monday January 26th to add more. 

 

         MOTION:  President Dalton entertained a motion to move Candice

                 Milan up to Junior Senate and Mekonnen Meshesha up to

                 Sophomore senate.

· President Dalton asked the group if they were still interested in

doing the training and they were so the seniors will start with

Time management on February 3.

 

· President Dalton announced that she is going to have a meeting

with the President about problems with the committees and

problems with the schedules.  If anyone has anything to say

about problems with either of these two issues see Andrea so that

she can make sure it is addressed.

 

                         III.      VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 

· Vice President Batastini announced that on Monday January 26

at 6:00PM in Vets Hall there will be a candlelight vigil in honor

of Martin Luther King.  This event is mandatory for groups and

clubs.  After that, group and club meetings will be on Thursdays

at 4:00 as usual.  Check your mailboxes for reminders.

 

· Vice President Batastini let everyone know that Greg Clement,

the associate director of the Campus Center got a job as the

director of student life at Mount Wachusetts so he is no longer

with us.  This will put a strain on lots of things so if you see a

chance to help out, that would be great.  Greg was also the

advisor for Program Council so this will also affect the concert,

but we will get through it.

 

                         IV.      TREASURER'S REPORT 
        

  · Treasurer Garvey welcomed everyone back and said that he

  looks forward to

another great semester.

 

                            V.      ASST. TREASURER’S REPORT

 

· Assistant Treasurer Mazza announced that he had put together the budget committee.

 

              MOTION: Assistant Treasurer Mazza made a motion to appoint

                Ashleyne Alexis, Melissa King, Michael Higgins, Ryan Cahill, Alyssa

                Batastini, Michelle Spano, and Matthew Cogliano to the budget

                committee.

                         VI.      SECRETARY’S REPORT

 

· Secretary Spano announced that the executive board would be

holding screen-ins on Monday, February 2nd during community

time, which is 11-12:15.  There a 3 senior senate seats, 1 junior

senate seat, and 3 freshman senate seats open as of right now. 

There are also openings for a chair of judicial affairs and a chair

of public relations.  She encouraged everyone to spread the word

and try to recruit people to join.  Anyone interested can pick up

an application in the SGA office.

 

                      VII.      SENATE REPORTS

 

   · SENIOR SENATE

 

· Senator Alexis informed anyone that is a senior that applications for graduation are out and they are due January 30.  These are very important because it includes information like how you want your name to appear on your degree. 

 

   · JUNIOR SENATE

    · FRESHMAN SENATE

                   VIII.      STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

·        FINANCE COMMITTEE

 

        MOTION:  Treasurer Garvey made a motion to appoint Candice Milan

               to the Finance committee.

·        RULES COMMITTEE

 

· Chair King needs a sophomore senator to join the rules committee now that Senator Milan has moved up to junior senate.

 

·Chair King mentioned that she had written 6 amendments over the vacation and they will all be brought up soon.

 

· Chair King asked if everyone in her committee could meet real quick after this meeting to check and make sure the meeting time is still okay for everyone.

 

                    · STUDENT LIFE COMMITTEE

 

· Chair Boucher informed us that her traffic light day didn’t

go well because no one participated.  She also mentioned

donating her hair to locks for love and suggested that others

do the same.

 

                    ·   ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 

 

· No Report

 

                             · GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

 

· Chair Lappas announced that on a national level, President Bush approved more money for education.  On a state level, Governor Romney proposed $170 million for education, $70 will go to public higher education.

 

· Chair Lappas told his committee that they would be meeting Monday, January 26th at 2:45 in room 224 of the Campus Center.  They will be going over election registration assistance programs and an SAT assistance program.  He asked his committee to meet briefly after this meeting to check and make sure the meeting time is still okay for everyone.

 

· Chair Lappas informed the group that House Bill 2400 was put to rest.

 

· Chair Lappas also announced that the presidential primaries would take place in Massachusetts at the beginning of March.

 

·        JUDICIAL AFFAIRS

·        PUBLIC RELATIONS

 

· No Report

 · None

 

                            X.      NEW BUSINESS

 

  · None

 

                         XI.      DISCUSSION

 

· Senator Runyan announced that Program Council is hosting

welcome back week events.  Tuesday they did caricatures,

Wednesday is 3D pictures, Thursday is engraved key tags, and

Friday is stuff-it, which is similar to build-a-bear.  All events are

from 11-2 in the North Campus dining hall.

 

· Dr. Brossoit reminded everyone about the Martin Luther King

Candlelight Vigil on Monday, January 26th at 6 pm in Vets Hall.

 He would appreciate it if everyone went.

 

· President Dalton announced Vinny T’s again for those who

came in late.  There was also a sheet sent around asking who

needed a ride and who could drive.
