The membership requirements listed below were adopted in 1994 by the chapters.Minimum qualifications for active student membership shall be as follows:
  • Completion of at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of the college course.
  • Completion of 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology.
  • Registration for major or minor standing in psychology or for a program psychological in nature which is equivalent to such standings.
  • Undergraduates who are elected to Psi Chi must rank in the upper 35% of their class in general scholarship.* They must also demonstrate superior scholarship in psychology, earning a minimum GPA in psychology courses of 3.00. Psi Chi accepts the policy of the institution regarding grades.
  • For graduate students, an average grade of "B" or better in all graduate courses, including psychology.
  • High standards of personal behavior.
  • Two-thirds affirmative vote of those present at a regular meeting of the chapter.

Any chapter may establish minimum scholastic qualifications that are higher than those listed above, if it appropriate for the school. The Psi Chi National Office does remind chapters, however, not to include service standards or attendance requirements in the membership requirements. Psi Chi is an honor society, and membership is based on scholastic achievement.

* In those few instances in which the upper 35% cutoff falls below a 3.00 GPA, students must have at least a 3.00 overall GPA.

  • Psi Chi provides a local, regional, and national forum for obtaining information and developing perspectives about the field of psychology, learning about educational and career opportunities, and forming meaningful professional networks.
  • At the local level, chapter membership facilitates leadership development, interaction with other students who have similar interests, and service to the department and institution sponsoring Psi Chi.
