To All Our New Students
Dear Student:
You are joining us at an exciting time. In June of this
year a Groundbreaking Ceremony marked the launching of Salem State College's
most significant building project in its 148-year history. The Central
Campus project will expand opportunities for our students.
It will create much-needed space for our growing academic
programs and it will create more opportunities for additional internship
and employment. It will also continue a trend that was ongoing long before
I became a student here in the 1960s. It is a trend of growth.
Salem State College has grown by leaps and bounds since
its modest beginning as a teachers college (housed in the Sullivan Building)
in 1854. While it has become the fourth largest public institution in
Massachusetts, Salem State College retains a friendly, caring atmosphere.
As you begin your journey with us, you will meet many of the caring faculty
and administrators that make this college so special. Remember that your
first year is critical. You will be challenged. You are being exposed
to a new academic learning experience, new faculty, new friends and new
surroundings. There are also many student-oriented centers such as Academic
Advising, Counseling, Financial Aid, Health Services, Adult and Lifelong
Learning, the Learning Center and Student Employment.
Your chance for academic success will be enhanced if
you give careful thought to the selection of your major and your class
schedule. Attend classes faithfully, study hard and carefully balance
your study, work and leisure activities. I would also ask that you get
involved. Choose at least one activity and give to it. Care about us and
about the campus. Be concerned, express your opinions and be a part of
the solution. Leave the campus a better place than it was when you started.
Good luck. I am looking forward to working with you.
Sincerely,

Nancy D. Harrington, President
