S.T.A.R.T.

Student Action Resource Team (S.T.A.R.T.) is the School of Social Work's BSW student organization. S.T.A.R.T. began in the spring of 1976 because social work majors felt a need to channel effectively their opinions and attitudes. Today, S.T.A.R.T. functions as the voice of the BSW social work student body and is involved in a variety of activities to benefit both the students and the community.

One focus of S.T.A.R.T. interest is the needs of the students themselves. The organization has been involved in trying to organize a drop-in center for majors to facilitate sharing of their common experiences, provide informal guidance about course selection, and get to know one another. Efforts have been made to supply Big Brothers and Big Sisters for freshmen or transfers in the major. S.T.A.R.T. has also sponsored discussions, films, and speakers and has co-sponsored such campus-wide activities as the Human Rights Convocation. In addition, S.T.A.R.T. sponsors the annual Awards Banquet in the spring.

S.T.A.R.T. shall have the following functions:

  • Nominating students for membership to the standing committees of the faculty except those dealing with the evaluation promotion/Tenure of faculty and to other committees and task forces as necessary.
  • Advising the faculty on matters concerning educational policy of the School.
  • Participating and encouraging student participation in the development of educational policies of the School.

S.T.A.R.T. members participate in many volunteer services to the community.
