Schools of Human Services
Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Schools of Human Services (SOHS) at Salem State College. For those new to the College or SOHS, our programs include the Schools of Nursing, Education, and Social Work, and the Occupational Therapy and Criminal Justice Departments. We are also host to the College's Preschool, which provides students with a low-cost day care for their children while they attend classes. Three of our programs, Nursing, Social Work, and Education are in the process of developing doctoral programs in anticipation of the College earning university status.
The School of Nursing recently completed construction on two state-of-the-art labs on the second floor of the Harrington Building on South Campus. These labs provide students with valuable hands-on experience in a clinical setting with the latest medical technologies. Our students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and our accelerated Direct Entry Program (DEP) for those who already have an undergraduate degree in another field, but are interested in pursuing a career in nursing. Our programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and hold full approval from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Our School of Education recently earned re-accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The School is also certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education (MDOE). Students can benefit from multiple programs geared towards a variety of career goals.
The School of Social Work is a service-oriented program offering both bachelor's (BSW) and master's (MSW) programs. Last spring break, 19 BSW students traveled to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity to assist rebuilding the area that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The School is also affiliated with the Massachusetts Child Welfare Institute (MCWI), which is part of the Commonwealth's Department of Social Services (DSS). The BSW and MSW programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The Occupational Therapy Department offers a combined bachelor's and master's program through a unique program for practitioners with an associated degree in OT. They are currently in the process of earning re-accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
The Criminal Justice Department continues to grow and will graduate its first Master of Science students this May. They also offer an undergraduate program that is Quinn Bill certified.
I encourage you to visit each academic department web page for more information on each of their programs. If my office can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
