Getting Started
Define your project - sketch a research "mission statement"
  • Build your Network - make department chair and others in your department aware of your plans as they may have experience and suggestions for you.
  • Consider Partnerships - your peers may be interested in working with you on a particular project.
Research funding sources
Contact the funding sources
  • Request proposal guidelines, a list of funded projects, and an annual report.
  • Ask if they require a letter of inquiry, a concept paper, or a full proposal.
Begin writing
  • Pay careful attention to guidelines.
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread!
Prepare the Project Budget
  • Be realistic in the amounts requested but don't underestimate the value of your work.
  • Be aware of the usual grant amounts of the funding sources you are approaching.
Pay attention to deadlines
  • Professional presentation and submission are of the utmost importance.
