SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
GOAL 4.
To create new undergraduate programs within and across academic
disciplines.
Short-term Objectives:
- Determine need for new majors and programs through regional needs
assessments, conferences and symposia, assessments of current
faculty interests and skills and student surveys.
- Investigate institutional and regional support for major programs
in Music, Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Studies, Foreign Languages,
and other existing programs.
- Bring all Arts and Sciences departments together to identify and
affirm the commonality of these disciplines. Initiate dialog geared
toward placing faculty in the classrooms of other than home departments.
- Reexamine cross-disciplinary programs on a continuing basis.
- Provide opportunity for cohesive departmental interactions, e.g.,
space, calendar, time for study, faculty development money, curriculum
development, workload formulae in order to promote program development.
Long-Term Objectives:
- Develop flexible models to help students meet the complexity of
futurecareer opportunities.
- Recommend that the core experience of every student include participation
in an interdisciplinary course.
- Initiate pilot programs in new interdisciplinary programs.
- Hire new full-time tenure track faculty in support of new majors
and programs.
