Congratulations to Dr. Martha Hunt!
Dr. Hunt, a mathematics professor and department chairperson, has recently been selected for an award of $44,712 for her proposal "Salem State College in Partnership with Lynn Public Schools: A Program to Enhance Teacher Quality and Student Achievement in Mathematics K-12." The award is offered by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education as part of its Improving Teacher Quality State Grant Program.
In the grant proposal, Dr. Hunt said the intent of the project "is to improve classroom instruction in mathematics thereby increasing student achievement on the mathematics MCAS exam, reduce the percent of unlicensed mathematics teachers, and increase retention of new mathematics teachers." The grant will allow Salem State College to provide professional development opportunities for Lynn's elementary, middle and high school math teachers and begin a mentoring program for those new to mathematics instruction.
Salem State College and Lynn Public Schools have a history of productive partnerships, including two ongoing grants. Says Dr. Hunt,"Both partners in this project look forward to the opportunity to collaborate once again and are committed to the goal of closing the student achievement gap for minority students in mathematics."
