School of Arts and Sciences Electronic Discussion Formats

SOAS Listserv

To facilitate discussion among Arts and Sciences faculty and staff, the Communications Team has established an electronic discussion list (more commonly known as a "listserv").

A listserv is simply an automated email discussion list: you submit a question or comment or observation to the list and it is automatically emailed to all members of the list, who then have the option of responding (or not) to all members of the list.

A part of the Dean's communications effort, the School of Arts and Sciences listserv, named "SOAS," will allow one more avenue of exchange among faculty and staff of the school.

To participate in the SOAS listserv, you need to "subscribe" to the list first. Once you're subscribed, you may contribute either by emailing something to it or by responding to someone else's email.

To subscribe to the SOAS listserv:

Go to http://listserv.salemstate.edu/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?join=soas and fill out the brief form.

To send a message to all members of the SOAS Listserv:

All messages to members of the list must go to the following email address:

soas@listserv.salemstate.edu

To send a new message (i.e, start a discussion on a new topic)

  1. Open your email program
  2. In the TO: box, type soas@listserv.salemstate.edu
  3. In the SUBJECT: box, briefly but accurately name the subject of your message.
  4. In the body of the email message, type your message.
  5. Send the message

Or...

You may "Reply" to any message from the listserv as you would reply to any other email message. Your reply will then be distributed to all other subscribers.

To remove yourself from the SOAS listserv:

  1. Open your email program (i.e., ExecMail, Simeon, Eudora, AOL Mail, Outlook Express)
  2. In the TO: box, type unsubscribe-soas@listserv.salemstate.edu
  3. Leave the subject and message blank. Do not type anything else.
  4. Send the message.

A final reminder

In general, we hope the discussions will center upon issues of academic and professional and pedagogical interest, though a certain amount of "socializing" is inevitable. There will be times of disagreement and controversy, as there should be. We ask that you keep them civil and professional, and avoid ad hominem attacks upon any individual.

Problems or questions should be directed to Rick Branscomb, ebranscomb@mac.com
