Facilitators: Dan
Costa, Physics Teacher
Jim Kearns,
Mathematics Department Head
Audience: Middle and High School Mathematics and Science Teachers
PDP’s: 10 Hours or 15 hours with Major Project Completed
Dates: Tuesdays December 11, 18 and January 8, 15
Time: 3:30 – 6 PM
Description:
This workshop will investigate projectile motion through two venues. Participants will first work with CPO (Cambridge Physics Outlet) Marble Launcher, where they can adjust angle and force in launching marbles. Data will be collected and analyzed and participants will determine the force and angle needed to hit a particular target. This activity will be then expanded into the design of a straw rocket. Using the same principles studied in the marble launching activity, participants will expand on those in seeing how the design of the rocket impacts on the results of the launching. All equipment used in the program will be available for loan to be used with your classes. Each activity will include the mathematics behind the organizing and analyzing of the results. Participants will use calculators and software to get a visual understanding of what is physically happening.
Day 1 and 2: CPO Marble
Launcher
Day3 and 4: Pitsco Straw Rocket Launcher
