Workshop 1: Open Response Writing Grades 3-6

Presenter: Joan Pokrant, Reading and Language Arts Consultant

Description: Data from MCAS scores suggest that some students know more than they show in their response answers. For other students, open response questions may reveal a lack of deep understanding — an inability to go further up Bloom’s taxonomy of thinking. This workshop will help you to improve the quality of open response answers in all content areas including response to literature.

At these three sessions you will learn to:

may be used daily in the classroom

Workshop 2: Demystifying the Social Studies Frameworks for Grades 3-5

Presenter: Helen Sellers, Grade 5 Teacher, Reading Public Schools

Description:  This workshop will have the sharing of resources, activities, field trip ideas and background content information to meet the different American History or US Geography Standards. Participants should bring favorite materials or textbooks that they use.

Session 1: What's in these Frameworks anyway- and how do we meet all these standards?

Session 2: Background information needed to successfully teach these standards-resourcing primary sources to help students. Adult texts that would help build successful background knowledge for the teacher.

Session 3: Sharing of best practices for Grades 3-5

Workshop 3: How to Teach Reluctant Writers in Grades 2-6

Presenters: Liz Lund and Helena Meyer, Language Arts Consultants

Description: We have identified six important strategies that will meet the needs of reluctant writers.

Workshop participants will obtain:

Session I           Strategy #1 (Having an Audience) & Strategy #2 (Using Technology)

Session II          Strategy #3(Writing About Personal Interests) & Strategy #4 (Writing withPeers)

Session III        Strategy #5 (Breaking Writing Down Into Smaller Parts) &

Strategy #6 (Incorporating Art & Music Into Writing) Strategies for Parents and   Sharing Experiences

Workshop 4: The Art of Math, Grades K – 5

Presenter: Deb Whitmore, Capt. Samuel Brown School,  Peabody Public Schools

Description: Participants will make and take art projects that will enhance units of study in mathematics. Integrating math and art allows for hands-on exploration of math concepts that may include number sense, patterns, relations, measurement, etc., which result in deeper understanding for the learner. Art techniques may include origami, tessellations, symmography (line art), paper weaving, paper engineering, collage, etc.

Workshop 5:     Fostering Inquiry in the Pre-k to 2 Classroom

Presenter:  Ann Harney, Elementary Science Consultant

Description: What is inquiry? What does it look like in the elementary science classroom                                     What does the learning environment look like that supports inquiry?

This Pre K-2 workshop is designed to help practicing elementary teachers answer these questions. Working collaboratively, participants will develop their understanding of inquiry through investigations, explorations, journal readings, and discussion.

We will be looking at the children’s literature that supports the scientific investigations and connecting our explorations to the Massachusetts Science and Technology

/Engineering Framework

Workshop 6:  Engineering is Elementary, Grades 2-5

Presenter:  Gail Naylor, Lynnfield Public Schools

Description: “Everyone Engineers!” is a favorite motto of a Museum of Science program, Engineering is Elementary.  Learn how you already have great engineering instincts and discover ways to bring your students’ learning to life, while addressing key content strands in the science frameworks.

First, we will look at how these units are organized in a clear, easy-to-use manner.  Then we will experiment with three different student kits.  In the acoustical engineering kit, students learn the difference between pitch and volume as they create musical instrument and listen to bird calls.  The Marvelous Machines kit has students exploring and discussing simple machines, technological processes and industrial engineering.  In the Solids, Liquids, and Chemical Engineering kit students study and analyze the physical reactions between selections of play dough materials.  All of the kits have adaptations for a variety of grade levels and they blend well with the state framework requirements.
