Sport Management Concentration
The concentration is designed to prepare educationally competent and trained sport managers in the rapidly growing dynamic field of sport. The program emphasizes providing a well-rounded education with a variety of theoretical and practical opportunities available to you. The curriculum provides you with a body of knowledge necessary for today's sport manager, reflective of the needs in the profession and the competencies in content areas required by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) and the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).
Sport Management Internship
The internship is an essential component in the professional growth and career development of sport management students. Through internships, students move from the role of the student to the role of professional, the internship allows students the opportunity to link sport management theory to sports organization practice. Significant benefits can accrue to the student who takes advantage of the opportunities which present themselves in various sport settings, including the chance: to gain valuable work experience under the supervision of a qualified, practicing professional; to develop and expand his/her network of contacts; to assume responsibility for project development and implementation; and possibly, to obtain a permanent position upon completion of the internship.
At Salem State College, prior to graduation, each student does an internship with an organization in his/her area of interest. The overall goal of the internship program is to provide a mutually valuable and beneficial employment experience for the intern and the host organization. While the intern receives valuable experience, the host organization can gain a highly motivated, specifically educated student worker who can offer new ideas as well as supplement the full-time, front office staff. The host organization is also able to acquire trained professionals and evaluate them for the potential full-time employment without any long-term commitment.
