GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS

Sextant, the award-winning journal of Salem State College, publishes essays, fiction, scientific reports, poetry, plays, art portfolios, and book reviews by faculty, staff, and administrators of the College. Submissions are welcome throughout the year. Manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial board with authors’ names omitted.

General Information
Please submit your manuscript, or description of your art portfolio, to the editor margaret.vaughan@salemstate.edu Submissions should be in completed form, double-spaced with page numbers, and should include a title page listing your name, college address, email address, and telephone number. Please submit your manuscript as a Word 97 (or earlier) document. You may send it as an attachment via email or by way of a 3 1/2" floppy disk to the Sextant office (204C Sullivan Building, Salem State College).

Style
Since Sextant is a magazine for general readership, various styles of writing are encouraged. When questions of style arise, however, the best source for rules of English usage is The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White. The Chicago Manual of Style is a good source to consult for questions regarding punctuation and grammar.

Length
Essays, fiction, plays, and scientific reports are usually 15 – 20 pages in length. Book reviews are typically 5 – 10 pages in length.

Graphics
When submitting a manuscript to Sextant, include any graphics you think are suitable for publication with your submission. Given the format of Sextant, photographs, illustrations, tables, or figures make essays more compelling.

Copyright
If your manuscript includes ample material from other published sources, it is your responsibility to obtain permission from the copyright holder. (The number of words requiring permission to reproduce varies with copyright holder.)

Each issue of Sextant will be copyrighted as a collective work. This means you have given permission to reproduce and distribute your manuscript or portfolio as part of the issue in which it appears, as part of any revision of the issue, or as part of a later issue of the journal. You retain all other rights to the use of your manuscript or portfolio.
