An actor, Robert Redford can at once be identified with memorable onscreen characters in some of Hollywood's legendary movies. Women tend to see him as the quintessential leading man, playing the romantic lead opposite such Hollywood icons as Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand. Men, however, tend to think of him as the "best friend" in some of Hollywood's classic buddy movies. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," starring Redford and Paul Newman, became an instant classic and the two later reunited for "The Sting," which won seven Oscars, including best picture.
As a director, he has received critical acclaim as well, scoring not only a best director Oscar for his first directorial attempt, the emotionally shattering family drama "Ordinary People," but a Directors Guild of America Award and a Golden Globe. Other well-known films for which he's received Oscar nominations and a variety of industry awards include "A River Runs Through It" and "The Horse Whisperer."
A large part of Redford's life is his Sundance Institute, which he founded in 1981. The Institute is dedicated to the support and development of emerging screenwriters and directors of vision, and to the national and international exhibition of new independent cinema.
An ardent conservationist and environmentalist, Robert Redford is a man who stands for social responsibility and political involvement and an artist and businessman who is a staunch supporter of uncompromised creative expression.
