Federal College Work-Study Program
The Federal College Work-Study Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. The program encourages community service as well as work related to courses of study. FCWS salary is at least the current federal minimum wage, but may be higher depending on the type of work and skills required. The total Federal Work-Study award depends on when the application is made, the level of need, and school's funding level.
You must apply for financial aid to be considered for Work-Study. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for evaluating your funds and offering awards. U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Award under the Work-Study Program is not guaranteed. It is dependent on funding, registering and attending classes, locating a job on-campus, and maintaining employment throughout the academic year. The number of hours students will work per week will depend on the department's needs, the amount of the student's award, and the student's schedule.
Positions both on and off-campus are available to students who have been awarded Work-Study. If you work on campus, it’s usually for SSC. If you work off campus, it’s usually for a nonprofit organization or a public agency. Off-campus FCWS jobs must be in the public interest, such as community service posts that improve the quality of life for people, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve problems related to their need.
America Reads - America Counts
Other FCWS job options are to join the America Reads and America Counts programs, established by President Clinton, to provide individual tutoring in reading and math to elementary school children. FCWS awardees, as well as students who want to volunteer their time, can tutor children in off-campus settings. Training, placement, and supervision will be provided. Students interested in participating should contact the Student Employment Office for more information.
