The Working Foreman directly supervises the Carpenters, HVAC Technician, and Maintainers. The Maintainer staff keeps the common areas of the buildings clean, and the Carpenters and Technician make repairs. Residents report facilities problems in the Maintenance Log, or, in an emergency, contact a Resident Assistant or Resident Director.

Resident Directors

The Resident Directors (RDs) are full-time live-in professionals who manage the residential areas, supervise staff and students, develop and run events, enforce behavior codes, and advise individuals and groups. Each RD has earned or is in the process of earning a Masters degree and has extensive experience working with college students. A professional staff member is on call every night to assist students with any emergencies.

Resident Assistants

Resident Assistants are undergraduate students trained to help you adjust to college life. They assist the Resident Directors with events and community development, resources and referrals, conflict resolution, and crisis management.

Most floors in Peabody and Bowditch Halls have one RA; one or two floors have two RAs. There is one RA for every two or three entryways at Bates. Each floor at Central Campus has two or three RAs. RAs answer questions about the College and campus life, plan events, assist with roommate problems, and make you feel welcome at Salem State.

Desk Receptionists

Desk Receptionists are resident students who staff the front desks (at Central Campus and at Bowditch and Peabody). They monitor who enters and leaves the building, enforce the guest policy, and act as a general resource for residents and guests. In addition to talking with an RD or RA, you may talk with a Desk Receptionist when you have questions.

Academic Mentors

Two Academic Mentors work in each of the first year residence halls; Bowditch Hall and in Peabody Hall. Academic Mentors hold office hours and run events especially designed to support the academic mission of the college.

Office Assistants

Office Assistants work for each RD and in the main office of the Department of Residence Life. They assist the Professional Staff by serving as a resource for students, scheduling appointments, and completing numerous other administrative tasks.

Mailroom Assistants

Mailroom Assistants work in each residential area. They assign mailboxes to students, distribute packages, and pick up and deliver mail each weekday (Monday through Friday).
