Veterans Educational Benefits
The Veteran Education Service administers the benefit programs outlined below. To learn about specific program information please go to the VA website or call 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) to speak with a Veterans Benefits Counselor.
Benefit Programs
- Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30)
- Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)
- REAP (Reserve Educational Assistance Program – Chapter 1607)
- VEAP (Veterans Educational Assistance Program – Chapter 32)
- DEAP (Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program – Chapter 35)
- Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Chapter 31)

Required Forms
It is the responsibility of the student to complete:
- the Application for VA Benefits (Form Number 22-1990 or 22-5490)
or
- the Request for Change of Program or Place of Training (Form Number 22-1995)
Each application can be completed online or may be obtained from Salem State College's Veteran's Representative, the Boston VA Office, or your local Veteran's Service Office.
IMPORTANT: If an online application is completed, you must send your VONAPP signature page directly to the VA office in Buffalo, NY. This documentation should also be sent to SSC's Veteran's Representative. Please be aware that the VA's decision on your eligibility may take up to 12 weeks.
FAFSA
Veterans Education Benefits must be reported on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). For more information, email finaid@salemstate.edu or call 978-542-6112.
Certification
- EACH SEMESTER the student must notify SSC's Veteran's Representative to request VA benefits for that semester.
- The student is obligated to report any change of status immediately to SSC's Veteran's Representative. This includes:
- any change in the number of credits for which the student is enrolled
- withdrawal from course or program
- change of program or major
Chapter 30 & Chapter 1606 Recipients
Once your enrollment has been certified by SSC's Veteran's Representative for the current semester, you must verify your enrollment with the VA at the end of each month before you will receive your monthly benefit. To verify enrollment, go to WAVE (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment) or call 1-877-823-2378.
