The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code 101
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code 101, The Life Safety Code, Chapter 5, prohibits the storage or placement of objects anywhere in a means of egress. The placement or storage of such items in a path of travel creates an obstacle that can become life threatening in the event of a fire emergency. The Life Safety Code is written to insure the safe egress of all building occupants. Obstacles may include furnishings, decorations, office equipment, or mirrors (if they confuse the direction of travel). Exit capacities are carefully calculated to insure that all building occupants can safely exit the building in an emergency. The placement of objects in exit paths reduces the numbers of occupants who can safely travel to an exit. We appreciate your cooperation and welcome your assistance in helping us enforce this regulation.
