Liberal Studies Major - Peace and Intercultural Relations Concentration

One of the newest offerings from Interdisciplinary Studies, the Peace and Intercultural Relations (PIR) Concentration is open to all Salem State students wishing to major in, or have a second major in Liberal Studies within the School of Arts and Sciences. As a concentration PIR is well suited to students who enjoy thinking deeply and across disciplinary boundaries, as well as the challenge of applying their knowledge and experiences to issues and events that shape the world in which we live.

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies, Peace and Intercultural Relations Concentration is concerned with issues of war, peace, social justice and their relation to contemporary life. The thirty six (36) credit program of study draws upon the strengths of many disciplines and emphasizes an understanding of recent history, contemporary social/political problems, ethical values, and how public policy can ameliorate or heighten social, political, national and international conflict. The courses of study focus on deepening an understanding of the complex national and global interactions, and taken as a whole seek to provide a framework for students to develop their understanding of the causes of and possible solutions to conflict.

The capstone courses POL 412: Seminar in the United Nations, and IDS 500: Special problems in Interdisciplinary Studies provide students with the opportunity to exercise their skills, skills that have been honed by a series of courses that emphasizes both depth as well as breadth of study.

Many careers, for example, international relations, public policy, business, education, law, and healthcare require an understanding of the sources of conflicts, as well as the methods and skills necessary to work towards a just equitable future.

The program is divided into a core of twenty four (24) credits that all in the PIR concentration take, these courses seek to provide the framework with which students will explore a specific focus. These focus options, (twelve credits) are taken up with a choice of one regionally based option; either the Middle East, Africa, Asia/Oceania, Latin America, Europe/Mediterranean, North American, or a focus that cuts across regional differences, Nature.

Minor in Peace Studies

Students can minor in Peace Studies through the Inter-Disciplinary Studies (IDS) Department.  They can take courses in a variety of departments, Biology, Criminial Justice, Geography, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Social Work.
