speaking on the Peltier case in Denmark, 1991, followed by speakers—Bruce
Gurwitz, paralegal and founder of the Council for Native American Solidarity
and Barbara McCarthy of Families and Friends of Prisoners will speak and discuss the Peltier case and native
criminal justice issues.
Leonard Peltier, Native American political prisoner, has
spent 25 years in prison for a crime the United States government says they
have no idea who committed. In 1976, he
was convicted of shooting two FBI agents.
This case is just one of many
other current instances of the United State’s legal system’s perpetuation of
injustice toward First Nation’s people.

An easy to understand overview of what the global corporate
economy does to real people and how we can unite to change it. Very positive
(full of success stories) and motivating in the face of a vast and daunting
problem. Concentrates on what the filmakers call the "race to the
bottom", which is the process of the rich getting richer and the poor
getting poorer (as represented by low wages and environmental degredation in
the third world) and the "Liliputian Strategy" which is the idea that
workers can, out of their own self interest, unite internationally and fight
injustice worlwide.

Speaker: Ajiza Magno, East Timorese activist
Monday, November 27, 2000
11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. (Community time)

Ajiza Magno is originally from Baguia, East Timor but grew up in Dili, the capital city. She was active in the East Timor resistance movement within Indonesia from 1993-1999 as she worked toward her undergraduate degree in economics at Universitas Sebelas Maret on the Indonesian island of Java.
East Timor is the eastern half of the island of Timor which lies between Indonesia and Australia. The land area of East Timor is the size of the state of Connecticut. In September 199 East Timor announced the results of a referendum on independence from Indonesia. This announcement triggered militia violence throughout the capital Dili. Many claim that the militias were trained and supported by the Indonesian armed forces.
