A study of the classical literature of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Shinto with readings, guestspeaker/s, field trip and videos.  Traditional problems of the nature of human beings, such as reincarnation and the problem of evil, will be discussed in the context of the social/cultural matrix of the East.

 

For those who wish:

·        To broaden knowledge about Eastern philosophical views

·        To understand how Eastern views are different from western views

·        To explore the question of whether the West has anything to learn from the East

·        To apply some of the Eastern concepts to life in the West

 

 

For undergraduate students, this course fulfills Division I Humanities requirement or free elective requirement.  It also fulfills the requirement for graduate students.
