2001 EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

Health and the Environment
through Activism, Research and Art

Overview

The goal of SSC (Salem State College) Earth Day 2001 is to present information about environmental concerns facing our local, state, national, and global communities to members of the SSC and the local community.  Faculty and students at SSC along with community representatives from HealthLink are working together to present this program.  Upwards of 15 SSC faculty are assigning research poster presentations for their classes, which will be presented from 11:00-12:30 in the Dining Commons.  Faculty and community judges will judge the posters and the finalists will be presented with awards and the posters will be shown during the evening program.  Environmental organizations are being invited to present information regarding their particular interest in and activism for the environment from 11:00-2:00 in the Dining Commons and in Forten Hall in the evening.

In the evening local school children will display their artwork on environmental themes in Forten Hall. A reception for the students, their families and the community will be held from 6:30-7:30. All schoolchildren whose work is represented in the Earth Day Show will be presented with certificates of merit. The President of the College, Nancy Harrington will present the certificates of merit to the children and the awards for the best SSC student posters. The keynote speaker for SSC Earth Day is Dianne Dumanoski, one of  the authors of the prized environmental study Our Stolen Future.  She will speak following the awards presentation.  Finally, throughout the month of  April the artwork of local artists, Gail Teschmacher McCormick and Sabrina

McCormick will hang on the first floor of the Library. A reception for students, faculty, administration and community members working on the Earth Day Project will be held on April 9 from 4-6pm. Local press and media will be invited to attend this opening and view "Our Fragile Earth."

·        Art show Opening Reception for students, faculty, administration and community members working on the Earth Day Project. The media will be invited.

MONDAY, APRIL 23

11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.

·      SSC Student Posters directed towards children and children’s art work in Forten Hall, Library, fourth floor

11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

·      Poster sessions on environmental issues by SSC students from a wide range of departments including Biology, Education, Chemistry, English, History, Philosophy, and Sociology. (Dining Commons Rm. 101B, Second Floor and Dining Commons Mezzanine, Third Floor)

Information tables staffed by local environmental activist organizations including Salem HealthLink, Wenham Lake Watershed Association, MASS PIRG, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and so on. (Dining Commons, First Floor)

6:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m.– Library, Forten Hall, Fourth Floor
