Vision
Mission
In terms of the peace movement, the Peace College will act as a direct agent of social change. Individuals committed to peace and nonviolence will be brought together under one roof. An intergenerational network of peacemakers will be established. Peace College participants will be trained to think and act nonviolently, and will also be challenged by new ways of thinking about the peace movement. Young people will be empowered as nonviolent leaders, and older individuals can both mentor and learn from these young people so as to expand overall enthusiasm for the peace movement.
The Peace College is a program designed by the FOR. However, the intention behind the Peace College is that the ideas and educational materials are available to any person or organization desiring to educate and train others to think and act nonviolently. If the peace movement is to make progress, programs like the Peace College must become mainstream and frequent. When the Peace College takes off as a widely used educational tool, it will be FOR who will be credited with change and growth within the national peace movement.
General workshop topics will be chosen from three basic subject areas: The Theory behind Peace and Nonviolence, How to Practice Peaceful Methods, and A New Peaceful Plan of Action. Specific workshop topics are still to be determined in relation to available teachers and speakers, but tentatively include the following:
- History of Nonviolent Activism
- Bringing Public Attention to Peace: Media, Corporations, and the Government
- Peaceful Conflict Negotiation and Resolution
- How to Build Grassroots Peace Organizations and Movements
- Practicing What You Preach: Ways Not to Lose your Cool in Hot Situations
- Civil Disobedience in the New Millennium
- The New Peace Movement: Incorporating Old and New Strategies
- Art as Nonviolent Activism and an Agent of Social Change
