Welcome

The Online Educators Group is a group that has not been active for some years. This page is kept for old times sake.

Mission statement

The Online Educators Group is an informal group of faculty and staff at Salem State College. Though it was initially convened by the School of Arts and Sciences, it is open to all members of the college community. Its mission is to investigate, support, and promote the offering of credit and non-credit courses online by Salem State College, and the use of online resources in regular online-enhanced courses to augment the meaningful contact and exchanges between the instructor and the students, as well as among the students. These resources include electronic mail, web sites, e-mail lists or bulleting boards (listservs), chat rooms, and so on.

Specifically, the Mission of the Online Educators Group is:

  • to provide regular opportunities for interested faculty and staff to meet and discuss online education.
  • to provide support to educators interested in offering courses online.
  • to encourage increased numbers of the college community to consider online courses.
  • to advise the college on matters of policy regarding online education.
  • to gather and disseminate research on online teaching.
  • to work closely with other areas of the college to ensure effective online education.
  • to investigate effective online curricula.

Additionally some members of the Online Educators Group group are also interested in other types of distance education, a broader term covering everything from correspondence courses to TV satellite broadcasts to Pict-Tel to Web-based learning. It would seem, however, that all types of distance learning are bound to adopt a strong online component in the future.
