As a member center of the Massachusetts Global Education Consortium, the Northeast Global Education Center at Salem State College provides the following services to the Northeast region of the Commonwealth:



 

Resource Room housed at Salem State College's Library:

The resource room in the Salem State College Library contains texts,  trade books, literature, periodicals, educational games, audio visuals, laminated maps, geography learning packets, computer software, and sample curriculum programs.  Also available upon special request are photo exhibitions and learning exhibitions for loans to schools , libraries, educational and child care centers.  The materials can be borrowed for development of global education in the PreK-12 curriculum and research projects on international issues and concerns. Speakers Bureau of experts in fields related to global issues:

An extensive network of college faculty, classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, international students, business leaders , writers , artists and governmental and agency officials are recommended upon request.  Teacher consultants trained by the National Geographic Society's outreach programs are also recommended through the center. Professional Development programs, institutes, workshops, seminar and lecture series:

  • The Northeast Global Education Center offers a variety of programs that grant Professional Development Points to educators in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Workshops, lecture series, seminars, and institutes are posted in the consortium newsletter and the center's web pages  as well as through a membership mailing list.
  • Educators interested in being included on the mailing list for these events should contact the Administrative Assistant at the center.  (top)

Research and Special Projects:

The Northeast Global Education Center supports  research and special projects in the area of global education.  Mini-grants, resources and consultation are available.  Both  pre-service and in-service educators are eligible for assistance with projects that infuse and develop global education in the curriculum.  Individual technical assistance offers  expertise to teachers seeking materials and/or information for unit building or general curriculum enhancement.  School based programs can be developed as models for dissemination at  center events.  (top)

Annual Events: 

  • The Massachusetts Consortium for Global Education's Global Educator Award:  Each year the Northeast Global Education Center (NGEC) nominates an educator as one of six recipients for the Global Educator Award.  The award ceremony is held at the State House in June.  Each recipient receives a plaque from the consortium in recognition of contributions made to global education  in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Student Teaching in England:  The Northeast Global Education Center supports educators who wish to develop a project in the Massachusetts schools and in the school placements for  Undergraduate or graduate practica in Great Britain.  The exchange projects are under the direction of  Dr. Louise Swiniarski, Coordinator of the Student Teaching Program in England.
  • Summer Institute:  An annual Summer Institute is offered in cooperation with the Massachusetts Global Education Program  and the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance.  This week long event offers professional development points or graduate credit  along with a stipend to each participant.  Funding for the institute is a joint venture of the Massachusetts Consortium for Global Education and the National Geographic Society.  (top)

The Northeast Global Education Center is also one of five resource centers of the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance.  As an outreach program of the National Geographic Society,  the center supports and infuses geographic education in the schools and  PreK-12 curriculum.
