NEWS: Welcome to President Patricia Maguire Meservey The staff of the Northeast Global Education Center (NGEC) would like to welcome the new thirteenth president of Salem State College, Dr. Patricia Maguire Meservey. We are looking forward to working with her in our global education programs. We wish her well as she leads the college community to new endeavors.
Funding Update and Acknowledgements The Northeast Global Education Center (NGEC) has again received funding from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ State Legislature through the Massachusetts Global Education Consortium at Framingham State College to globalize the mandated curriculum in the schools of the Commonwealth. The Northeast Global Education Center at Salem State College is one of six centers in the consortium with its hub located at Framingham State College. We at the Northeast Global Education Center wish to thank Susan Dargan, coordinator of the Massachusetts Global Education Consortium at Framingham State College, for her constant efforts to sustain the consortium and pursue the funding. The NGEC directors would also like to thank the administration at Salem State College: Provost Diane Lapkin, Dean Marc Glasser, Dean of the Graduate School, Dean Susan Cirillo of Salem State College Library, Dean Anita Shea of Arts and Science, Dean Neal DeChillo of the Schools of Human Services and Associate Dean Mary-Lou Breitborde of the School of Education for their continued endorsements of our center.
NGEC Directors at International and National Programs Dr. Richard T. Anderson (Professor Emeritus of Geography) has represented the National Council for Geographic Education at the annual meetings of the Geography Education National Implementation Project (GENIP) for the past twelve years. In October, Dr. Anderson attended his last GENIP meeting in Washington, D.C. to promote Geography in the curriculum throughout the United States. The college community and educators throughout Massachusetts wish to thank Dr. Anderson for his many years of service to the organization. Dr. Anderson continues to teach as a professor emeritus in Salem State College’s Geography Department. In October Dr. Louise Swiniarski was invited to present a session on global education at the Best Practices in Education Conference, sponsored by the Center for Education and Community, Friends of the School of Education and the Salem State College Alumni Association. Her presentation entitled, Global Education through Monopoly provided teachers, principals, curriculum coordinators and college faculty with approaches to globalize the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks using international versions of the classic game of Monopoly. Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK has appointed Louise Swiniarski to the Carnegie Faculty of Sports and Education as a Visiting Professor. Professor Swiniarski frequently lectures at the university and partners with its faculty on several projects. She recently joined Avril Brock, a Senior Lecturer of Leeds Met, in a presentation entitled, An International Partnership’s Ideas to Transform Early Education Practices for Global Understanding and Cultural Sensitivity, to participants at the Association of Childhood Education Association’s Annual Conference in Tampa in May 2007 and again in October 2007 at Leeds Met to education majors. An up-coming article by Brock and Swiniarski in the British journal, 3-13 Education will highlight their approaches to teaching global education to young children in schools. During her recent stay at the university Professor Swiniarski also attended an International Colloquium on Practitioner Research with representatives from Great Britain, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands as well as the USA.

Recent Publications Springer Publications of the Netherlands has published an article, Starting School Early in Britain: A Model for Universal Education in the Vol .35, No.1, August 2007 edition of Early Childhood Education Journal, by Louise Swiniarski. The article offers an overview of early education practices in Great Britain as a model for the growing international movement in the USA and abroad to provide universal preschool education for all young children three to five years old. Both print and online copies are available through our library services. Leeds Metropolitan University website has published under Education Reflections, a reflection piece entitled A Visiting Professor’s Reflections which notes the most recent experiences of Louise Swiniarski on its campus (11, 2007). www.leedsmet.ac.uk/carnegie/11246.htm
Student Teaching in England Program News Student teachers from the Education Department’s graduate and undergraduate programs at Salem State College continue their practica in the schools of Ilkley, England. The cooperating schools have received the honor of being designated as Beacon Schools by the British government. Salem State student teachers include Nettie Harrington, Christine Irwin, Sarah Gillotte and Jamie Cobb. Congratulations to our students for their contribution to this tradition of excellence in international education.
