Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) English to Speakers of Other Languages

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is designed to prepare students to teach English Language Learners in a variety of settings combining theory and practice and is taught by faculty members who are leaders in the field. We are nationally recognized by both NCATE and TESOL as meeting their high standards for teacher preparation programs. As such, coursework meets the licensure standards of the Massachusetts DESE and those of NCATE/TESOL which includes 75 hours of pre-practicum experiences and a 300 hour practicum.

The Licensure Program

Those students who wish to pursue a teaching license in Massachusetts can pursue the 39-credit Licensure Track that includes a supervised student teaching practicum.

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages licensure program leads to Commonwealth of Massachusetts initial licensure to teach English as a Second Language in grades PK- 12. After a student’s pre-practicum experiences, he or she may choose to be licensed in grades PK-6 or 5-12. The student will then be placed for his or her practicum or student teaching experience in the grade level of choice.

The Non-Licensure Program

The Non-Licensure Track is best for those students who may already have a license in teaching English Language Learners or English as a Second Language, or for those who would prefer to pursue a career in adult or  community agencies, community college or higher education program, language schools in the U.S., or overseas. This program is also appropriate for those students who may already have a license to teach ESL but do not have a Master’s degree. This program has a field experience component but not a formal practicum.
