Library Building CLOSED

Dear Campus Community Member:

At the recommendation of the state Division of Capital Asset management (DCAM), I am closing the Salem State Library, effective at 6 PM today, Monday, October 15, 2007. This action is being taken to address concerns raised today by an engineering consultant report over the structural safety of the building.

The building will be closed for a minimum of one week. During this time, we will determine if there are approaches that will safely permit us to use certain areas of the building. I will notify the Salem State Community when we have reached a decision.

Faculty, staff and students will be required to leave the building by 6 PM. Please take any materials you will need for the next week with you, as you will not be allowed to re-enter the library during this time. Please remember that student advising begins this week and take these files with you. If you find there are materials that are critical to your work that are left in the building, please contact your Dean/Area Head, and we will make arrangements to retrieve them for you.

All classes, meetings, etc., that are normally held in the library will be cancelled for this evening and tomorrow until 4:30 PM. Evening classes for DCGE (Continuing Education and Graduate Education) will be held as scheduled. Faculty and students will be contacted by the DCGE Offices for the location of these classes.

All classes and operations (i.e. the Learning Center) will be assigned temporary space beginning Wednesday morning at 8 AM. Further information will be posted on this webpage as it becomes available.

Closing a key academic building, the library, poses a great challenge to our community. I am confident that with creative problem solving and patience, we will find a successful outcome for all. Thank you for your assistance during this process.
