The "new" language lab

The Foreign Languages laboratory at Salem State College is currently undergoing a thorough redevelopment. Unfortunately the new lab, or rather Language Resource Center, did not open for business on Sep. 1, 1999, or even on Jan 20, 2000, as anticipated. Due to budget issues, the computers, software, and audiovisual equipment have not arrived yet. Until the new Language Resource Center is in operations we will continue to provide students with tapes for their classes to listen to on their own at home.

The Language Resource Center will only be open for 10 hours a week during the Fall 1999 and Spring 2000 semesters and there will be a single lab assistant, Ms. Lisa Mattielli.

Language tape service

All beginning and intermediate language courses have a language laboratory component for which students need to listen to tapes containing conversations and other language samples so that they may complete the relevant sections in their workbooks.

The laboratory component is a mandatory part of these language courses and students are required to obtain the relevant tapes and complete the laboratory sections of their workbooks. For this purpose students must obtain copies of those tapes from the language laboratory.

In the past students have brought their own tapes to the language lab to be copied from a master copy. At present the Department of Foreign Languages has adopted a new system, which is hopefully more efficient for students, by which tapes will be lent by the department to the students and will be handed out in class by the professors.

There is an alternative, and highly recommended and preferable, way to listen to the language "tapes" for some courses, in particular SPN 101, SPN 102, SPN 201, and SPN 202. This can be done at the Arts and Sciences Computer Lab in SB 109C. Click here to learn more.
