HOPE AWARD ESSAY CONTESTDeadline: April 23, 2008The Department of Foreign Languages' HOPE AWARD was established in 2004. The award is given to the winner of an essay contest based on the following ideals. Doing Humanitarian work Creating Opportunities for those in need Promoting Peace in the world Sharing your Expertise about linguistic and cultural diversity The contest deadline is published in the spring issue of Lingua Franca, the Department of Foreign Languages' newsletter. Award: $150 Essay Topic: Students are invited to write an essay around Paul Claudel's quote: "Man knows the world not by what he takes from it, but by what he adds to it." You may discuss contributions you have made to making our world a better place or to the impact your life has had or will have on the world. You may reference humanitarian work you have done and plan to continue or a project you plan to pursue in the future. Details: Open to students who are majors or minors in the Department of Foreign Languages. Essays should be no longer than two pages long, written in any language represented by the Department (English, French, Italian, Spanish). Evaluation Criteria: Importance of contribution and clarity of expression.
