Foreign Language Credit and Requirement Satisfaction by ExaminationAt present the Department of Foreign Languages awards credit for the following tests:

There are 2,900 colleges that grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP exams." In the area of foreign languages, the CLEP test is currently available for French, German and Spanish. Other languages may be available soon. Credit granted at Salem State CollegeA minimum score of 63 will result in the granting of 6 credits for 201 and 202 and automatic satisfaction of the language requirement. What to do nextWhen you take the CLEP test, request that your scores be sent to the Registrar at Salem State College. You will be granted the appropriate credit automatically. If your credit doesn't appear on your record in Navigator, check with the Registrar's office. You can use your Spanish or French 201-202 credits for a minor in Spanish or French. You will only need to take 3 more advanced courses to complete the minor. Advanced Placement (AP)Currently available for French, German and Spanish. Other languages may be available soon. Credit grantedA score of 5 carries 9 credits, for 201, 202 and the Advanced Grammar course of the particular language, all three of which count towards the minor. It results in automatic satisfaction of the language requirement. A score of 4 carries 6 credits, for 201 and 202, both of which count towards the minor as well. It results in automatic satisfaction of the language requirement. A score of 3 will carries 3 credits, for 201, which counts towards the minor. The student still needs to take the advanced intermediate course (202 or equivalent) to satisfy the language requirement. NYU Language Testing at North Shore Community CollegeIf you have knowledge of a languge that is not taught at Salem State and that is not tested by the College Board, you may still satisfy the language requirement by obtaining a passing score in the 12 point foreign language test from New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies at North Shore Community College, through its Center for Alternative Studies & Educational Testing (CAS). This can be used only for satisfying the language requirement, but not for obtaining credits. New York University Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting Proficiency Testing (NYU page) is available for various languages: Albanian, Arabic, Armenian, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hatian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Ibo, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish Gaelic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Lithuanian, Malay, Mandarin, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Ukranian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Yiddish, You register for the test at NYU and take the test at NSCC.
