Nursing Education

Nursing is perceived as a low-status occupation by the Vietnamese.

Nurses receive only 2 1/2 years of training.

Although a 3-yr nursing curriculum was proposed by the VNA, the Ministry of Health approved only a 2 1/2 yr program. As explained to me by Ms. Loan (center), Vice-President of the VNA, and the nursing school director, this essentially eliminated the public health curricula by approving only 15 hours for primary health care, I.e. Immunizations.

Dialectic materialism is included as part of nursing and medical school curriculum.

The director of a 2 1/2 year secondary nursing school in Saigon, shows me a typical nursing classroom. Nursing education is primarily lecture/demonstration.

A limited number of nursing books are available in the hospital but are in English. The only nursing text that students have is a translated 6th edition of med/surg by Brunner. This was done with the aid of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and costs approximately $3 USD.
Ms. Loan repeats like a mantra, "We need a good nursing fundamentals text written in vietnamese"!

Medical equipment for nursing demonstation is stored in this locked room for the summer vacation period.

Nursing school director points out limited teaching equipment.

"Can you help us with our teaching laboratory", she asks.
