Maternity

Waiting room at one of two maternity hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City (still called Saigon).

It is averaging a range of 80-120 births per day.
Women labor quietly in large open wards.
Nurses assist a doctor examining a woman in active labor while other patients watch and wait their turn.

Privacy is not highly regarded; this door remains open.
Nurse midwives assess their patients in semi-private, open delivery areas.

Since children, especially infants, are highly valued by the Vietnamese people, midwives are viewed at a higher status than nurses.
The nurse midwife's role is primarily technical with little exchange between nurse and patient. Emotional support for the patient is not apparent.

Note: mask but no gloves are worn.
Nurse midwife uses fetalscope to assess woman in active labor.

There are no fetal monitors.
Nurses and patients in the post delivery recovery area.
