Congenital Deformities

Nurses attending to a ward of children with multiple congenital birth defects. All except one call the hospital home. Note that the nurses and children wear no shoes to keep the newly tiled floor clean and comfortable for the children.

It is believed that Vietnam has a high rate of deformities due to dioxin, or "agent orange", an extremely toxic chemical used by the USA during the "American War". Most of these children come from poor rural areas where the chemical remains in the fertile soil.

Two brothers were conjoined twins who shared a pelvis. They were successfully separated and continue to call the hospital home as young teenagers. One brother is totally dependant for all of his needs. He is profoundly physically and mentally impaired. A devoted missionary nurse routinely continues to come care for him.

The other brother is able to read and write and ambulates with a full pelvic leg prothesis.

Eight year old brother of burn patient.

This child has a genetic disorder called,
"Progeria Syndrome" which causes premature aging.

Despite their tremendous handicaps, these children seemed happy and well-cared for.

Few toys were observed but the group had a plastic ball that they used to play their own type of soccer.
