Interdisciplinary Studies
Peace and Intercultural Relations Concentration
Peace and Intercultural Studies is a concentration to provide a dual learning opportunity for students. First, from the broad interdisciplinary base Peace & Intercultural Studies provides, students will develop a strong foundation for understanding the multi-faceted issues of war, peace, and social justice in the world today. Students gain familiarity with general historical, social, and political contexts in order to more deeply understand the complexities of our current global situation. Students are also asked to step back and philosophically reflect on the more general ethical questions involved in issues of war and peace. Second, by selecting a particular focus option students become specialists in the particular issues of one world region, or in intersections of war and peace with environmental issues. Throughout the course of study, students will explore alternatives to conflict as well as methods and skills for managing and controlling conflict when it occurs.
There are currently seven focus options within the concentration: Asia/Oceana, Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Nature.
