Welcome to the new Graduate Voice, an online biannual newsletter publication of the Graduate School, featuring stories and news related to the academic, professional and personal achievements of Salem State's graduate students, faculty, alumni members and Graduate School staff.

Faculty Profile: Meet Dr. Lisa Mulman

Dr. Lisa Mulman arrived at Salem State College three years ago after pursuing an undergraduate degree in English at Harvard and her Master's and Ph.D. at Duke University, where she specialized in 20th Century Literature. Now in her second year in a full-time tenure track position, she oversees the Master of Arts in English program and co-coordinates the Master of Arts/Master of Arts in Teaching English program. She spends much of her time working with teachers returning to school to achieve licensure and with students interested in pursuing professional writing careers. She describes the students in this program as being "driven by hunger and enthusiasm for reading and learning" and feels that working with them is an honor.

Inside Scoop: Reflections on the Graduate Assistant Experience

"Life in the F. A. S. S. T. Lane"

Molly A. Smith and Associate Dean of Education, Dr. Mary-Lou Breitborde

I was happy in my bubble. I commuted to Salem State College twice a week to attend graduate classes in the School of Social Work, and in my entire first month of school had not interfaced with anyone other than the MSW students, staff, and faculty. I went to the same building everyday, and often to the same classrooms, only speaking to people outside the program if it involved an exchange of money in the cafeteria (Skittles are my preferred pick-me-up before night classes.) or entrance into the computer lab. Luckily, I loved the people involved in my program and felt fulfilled socially and academically through my relationships with them.

"A Dream Come True"

Moumita Dutta Gupta and Professor Laurence Goss, Geography Department

I was always a dreamer and one of my greatest dreams was to complete my studies in the United States. Hence, after completing my undergraduate work in India, I was determined to do my Master’s in Geo-Information Science, but without having a clue on how to proceed. I did not know anyone in the U.S.; therefore, even my parents weren’t very confident about my coming here all by myself without any support. Moreover, I come from a very ordinary family and attending school in the U.S. was like an unrealistic dream -- until I came across Salem State College.
