| Admission Requirements |
- A completed admissions application and $35.00 non-refundable application fee made payable to Salem State College.
- An official transcript from an accredited college or university, which documents an earned bachelor's degree. Applicants should have an arts and sciences major, or a major appropriate to the teaching of English as a Second Language.
- Official transcripts of any graduate courses taken or degrees held.
- Candidates with a Massachusetts teaching license should submit a copy of their license with the admissions application. Candidates without a Mass. teaching license must submit documentation of a passing score on the Communication and Literacy portions of the Mass. Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL).
- A 500-1,000 word, typed, double-spaced statement of purpose addressing the following questions:
- What factors in your personal and professional history have influenced you in the past which now lead you to seek admission to this program at Salem?
- What are your long-term professional goals, and how will this program help you meet them?
- Is there any other information that you think would help the admissions committee to evaluate your application?
- Three completed "Reference for Graduate Admissions" forms. Please include references from people who have known you in either professional or academic capacities. Referees may attach a letter to the form, but must return the completed form.
- An official copy of test results taken within the last five years, which document satisfactory performance on either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), unless a master's degree or its equivalent has been awarded.
- All applicants, whose first language is not English, must submit satisfactory test scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), in addition to test results from either the MAT or GRE. f you are unsure about the necessity of TOEFL score, please contact the program coordinator.
- All candidates for MAT-ESL must have proficiency in a foreign language at the intermediate level before completion of the program. Proficiency may be demonstrated by completed coursework at the undergraduate level or equivalent test results.
